It is no secret that many are looking for alternatives when shopping this holiday season. In the past, many of us would follow the ways of Wilma Flintstone and just, “Chaaaarge it!”

But these days, money is tight, the economy is a mess and well, we’re just not sure if giving gifts will be as easy this year.

Perhaps you will consider a few other options during this holiday season:

• Buy Early: Begin your shopping now, or very soon, to guarantee you will have your gifts purchased in time for the holidays.
• Buy Less: Don’t go crazy. Perhaps purchasing one semi-expensive gift, or several small inexpensive gifts is the way to go.
• Shop Sales: Shopping on Black Friday is a tradition for many people, but if you don’t have that luxury, shop the sales racks, use the circulars you would normally toss in the garbage, and make use of your coupons.
• Utilize Layaways: Most department stores have done away with the layaway, but some have either never gotten rid of it, or have brought it back for the holiday season. Some that come to mind are TJ Max, Marshalls, Burlington Coat Factory and K-Mart.

There is always the option to not give gifts at all. But where is the fun in that? You can at least make gifts to give your personal touch and for the sentimental appeal.
